The Sabah State Library was established in 1953 as a section of the Broadcasting and Information Department. In 1966, it merged with the Sabah Museum to form the Libraries and Museum Department. In 1972, it became a separate state department. Presently, the library is under the auspices of the Ministry of Community Development and Consumers Affairs, Sabah. The Sabah State Library is funded by both the state and federal governments.
The policy of the State Library is to establish services in all districts of the state. To date Sabah State Library has an extensive network comprising a Headquarters Library, 3 Regional Libraries, 18 Branch Libraries, 14 Mobile Libraries, 44 Village Libraries and 2 Des@Net ( i.e. Internet mobile vans with notebooks facilities). The Sabah State Library is opened to the public daily except every first and third Saturday of the month and public holidays. Books and multimedia materials are loaned to registered members.
The State Library's objectives are as follows:
1. To promote and encourage the use of Sabah State Library's resources and services,
2. To provide excellent customer-focused services,
3. To develop a corp of highly-skilled staff committed to providing quality services,
4. To provide electronic access to Sabah State Library's resources,
5. To provide information on Sabah through the Local History Collection and Government Publications Collection,
6. To maintain close cooperation with the National Library of Malaysia and other State Libraries.
